Preceding Muhammad Ali’s reign as Heavyweight Champion, renowned brawlers Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson took center stage with two title bouts in a 10-month span. Issued for those bouts, these (4) souvenirs are among the most rare pugilism artifacts. Includes: 1962 Program/Press Kit/Wire Photo issued at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, a 20-page (EX-MT) guide and a Press Kit folder with original inserts on “Championship Sports, Inc.” promoters’ letterhead; 1963 Broadside a display advertising closed-circuit coverage of the rematch. Vintage September 25, 1962 Wire Photograph an overhead shot of Patterson sprawled on the canvas following Liston’s first-round knockout. Referee Frank Sikora is pictured as he directs Liston to a neutral corner. The photo hails from The Sporting News archives and its reverse is home to a “Wide World Photo” stampings and an editorial marking.

July 22, 1963 “Re-Match” Broadside features black-and-white likenesses of the combatants against a bright-yellow background. This particular 14-1/8 x 21-3/4” thick stock display directs fans to Duluth, Minnesota’s Denfeld Auditorium to watch a closed-circuit broadcast of the Heavyweight bout in Las Vegas. As opposed to the billing for their previous fight, Liston is listed as the champion and Patterson as the challenger. The result, however, was the same: a first-round knockout by Liston. With the correct date and time adhered nearly 50 years ago, this piece presents beautifully.
