Graded 96 Mint 9 by SGC. By the Baseball Centennial season of 1939, Joe DiMaggio had already established himself as one of the best players in the game. Not only did the young superstar pummel American League pitching en route to the first of three Most Valuable Player awards over his career, but the Yanks swept their way past the hapless Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. A very confident Joe DiMaggio is front-and-center on this incredible 1939 Play Ball #26 portrait. The nearly 75 year-old treasure appears as when produced decades ago by the Philadelphia confectioner. The centered portrait of the Yankee legend is framed by razor-sharp corners, creamy edges and impeccable surface registration. The biographical reverse is accentuated by clear and bold black typeface. Of the (3500+) 1939 Play Ball examples submitted to the discerning grading service, a mere 1.4% of any card has reached this tier with none better. Of the (247) #26 DiMaggio examples judged, only five have reached the Mint 9 level with none better. Any way you do the math, the conclusion is clear; this DiMaggio cornerstone is an instant crown jewel of any pre-war collection.
