While the nine players they acquired weren’t quite household names, they helped the Orioles break from their St. Louis Browns predecessors and establish a separate identity in a blockbuster 17-player trade with the New York Yankees. Completed on November 17, 1954, that transaction was front page material for the December 8 The Sporting News issue. Commissioned to compose the artwork for that cover, renowned artist Lou Darvas was true to the task with a Revolutionary War-themed illustration. Framed to dimensions of 23-5/8 x 33-5/8” under gray matting, this original Darvas artwork is displayed alongside the published finished product. Drawn in black with shaded tones, Darvas’ piece depicts Orioles skipper Paul Richards on a horse (a la Paul Revere) as his newly acquired players follow with weapons in hand.
