Key components of Bostonís fascinating baseball lore are inherent to this 1911 program. Issued at the South End Grounds during the September 12-14 series between the New York Giants and host Boston Rustlers, the eight-page guide features unmarked scoring grids with pre-printed lineups listing Hall of Fame opponents Cy Young and Christy Mathewson. With covers and all pages intact, the program has a moisture-induced stain and horizontal compacting fold, yet still presents nicely. More on our website.
Between stints as the Boston Doves and Boston Braves, the Senior Circuit club was purchased by Williams Hepburn Russell (Bostonís ďoriginalĒ Bill Russell, if you will). While his tenure as boss was short lived (Russell died on November 21, 1911), he acquired the 44-year-old Young on August 19. That limits this programís possibilities to one of three dates (September 12, 13, 14) against the New York Giants. With the scoring grids unmarked, the program cannot be attributed to one specific date, though itís entirely possible that the guide was issued on September 12 as Mathewson earned the decision over his aged counterpart. Throughout his amazing career, Young yielded only 138 home runs but on that date, the Giants touched him for three of those round-trippers.
