With iconic status unmatched by any personality before or since, Babe Ruth provided incomparable photo and marketing opportunities (in addition to his unparalleled feats on the diamond). Called upon for countless endorsements, Ruth was also the subject of this 1928 musical composition. Entitled “Babe Ruth! Babe Ruth! (We Know What He Can Do),” this vintage sheet music features a front cover illustration of the slugger. The interior pages feature a treble and bass clef score with four verses of lyrics. Also included is a period celluloid pin hawking that same song.
Of note is the inside back cover, which features “amended” lyrics. Still available seven years after its original issue, the sheet music altered its fourth chorus to include updated “Boston” content during Ruth’s abbreviated 1935 swan song with the Braves. The lyrics were adhered over the original words. The sheet music presents nicely, though is affected by a small tear at the left edge. The pinback, meanwhile, shows impeccable preservation.
