Not long for their St. Louis home, the Browns shared Sportsman’s Park with the Cardinals but had little else in common. A midget player and the signing of 45-year-old Satchel Paige were among publicity stunts which, while noteworthy in baseball history, did nothing for the club’s league-worst attendance. So while success was fleeting throughout the Browns tenure, the memories they made were plentiful. Relics such as this 1952 game-worn jacket are among the most rare and appealing in the realm of baseball collectibles. Attributed to right fielder Earl Rapp, this brown wool zippered garment showcases the club’s “Brownie” elf mascot (introduced in 1952) embroidered to a white felt panel on the left breast. Red-and-white striped stretch ribbed cotton lines the collar, waistline and sleeve endings. Within the collar, a “Wilson” size “44” label is accompanied by the remains of a leather hanger. Heavy wear is evident with minimal fading, as well as fraying/separation about the collar and sleeve endings.
