Description

A stickler for detail and accountability, Hall of Fame coach Weeb Ewbank fine-tuned the upstart Baltimore Colts into NFL champions in back-to-back seasons. Among the most unusual and seldom seen nuggets of football memorabilia, the offered lot is a virtual diary of the Colts’ preparation for the 1958 world championship campaign. The 86 pages include many composed entirely in Ewbank’s hand to chronicle day-to-day activities. Most entries are on Colts stationery with the club’s equine-themed logo and Charles St. address. Leaving no stone unturned, Ewbank listed the attendees, lunch times and even noted a broken pencil sharpener. Atop his depth chart at the quarterback slot was, of course, Unitas. Also included are pages listing weight and health issues, among them “high blood pressure” and “ingrown hairs on back of neck.” By the August 5 entry, Ewbank noted: “the worst thing that can happen to you right now is to show lack of effort.” This is truly a unique lot certain to appeal to the NFL historian.
