Already the recipient of three MVP laurels, Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt became the 14th member of the esteemed 500 Home Run fraternity in 1987. Following that historic blow, Schmidt passed existing club members like signposts along the highway, leaving Ott, Mathews, Banks, Williams and McCovey in his wake by seasons end. This ONL Giamatti baseball was launched and signed by Schmidt as he reached yet another milestone that year: most career home runs by a third baseman. The historic sphere exhibits earmarks of game use and is signed (and personalized) by Schmidt in blue ballpoint (9 strength) on a side panel. On an adjacent panel, an inscription reads: Sept. 20, 1987 Phillies 4 at Montreal 1 Randy St. Claire 8th Inn. 526th career 487th as a third baseman Major League Record. Full photo LOA from JSA. The legend detailing the events and significance of the home run were inscribed in an unknown hand, likely that of the Phillies staff member who retrieved the ball immediately after it was hit. Coincidentally, Schmidt had hit career home run number 511 to tie Mel Ott at that same venue agaisnt the same pitcher (St. Claire) on June 14 of that season.
