Idle during the postseason despite 100 regular season triumphs, the 1980 Baltimore Orioles had a better record than three of the four division winners. This OAL MacPhail baseball is autographed by (33) members of that unsung Birds roster. The creamy sphere (grade “7-8”) is affected by instances of very mild toning and showcases ballpoint signatures that average (“6-7”) strength and clarity. Includes:
Sweet Spot Weaver (manager); North Panel Palmer, Stewart, Dauer, Hazewood, Belanger (d.1998), Stoddard, Ayala and Crowley; South Panel May, Garcia, Sakata, T. Martinez, Roenicke, Bonner, McGregor and Dempsey; West Panel Ripken, Sr. (coach, d.1999), Krenchicki, Singleton, Lowenstein, Graham, Rayford, Kelly (d.2005) and Hartzell; East Panel Miller (pitching coach), Murray, Flanagan (d.2011), F. Robinson (coach), Bumbry (inscribed “#1”), Stone and Ford; Reverse Sweet Spot Hendricks (coach, d.2005).
Note: These signatures were likely gathered in September at the latter portion of a torrid season-ending stretch in which the Orioles went 52-20. This is evidenced by the signatures of late-season call-ups Bonner, Krenchicki, Hazewood and Rayford. Hazewood, incidentally, was a strikeout-prone power hitter whose longball promise was to Weaver’s liking. Hazewood’s signature is one of the rarest Oriole scriptings. Full photo LOA from JSA.
