Composed in 1935 by renowned German-born musician Fred Fisher and Eleanor Gehrig, “I Can’t Get to First base With You” was dedicated to tireless Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig and issued in sheet music form such as the offered 1935 piece. A black-and-white photo (colorized with maroon tones) portrays “The Iron Horse” on the front cover in this Yankee road apparel. Making a period “fashion” statement, Gehrig is holding a cigarette while a cameo likeness of his wife accompanies. Inside, the bass and treble clef scores feature notes and lyrics. Written in common time, the lyrical content conveys a woeful tale. This unusual relic shows nice preservation with evidence of minor handling that includes edge/corner creases and a tiny tear along the lower border. While popular belief is that Mrs. Gehrig’s name was listed for effect, this may not be entirely true as the first baseman’s wife was said to be quite a talented pianist.
