Description

Babe Ruth had an incomparable swing and penchant for the unprecedented. Less embracing of the spotlight, teammate Lou Gehrig had similar strength and abilities. Capitalizing on the opportunity at hand, legendary agent Christy Walsh managed to make the pinstriped pair even more popular than they already were. Autographed by the fence-clearing Yankee pair during their 1928 barnstorming tour, this baseball is an incredibly well-preserved keepsake from an unforgettable chapter in baseball history. Specifically, this unofficial “League Special” sphere was endorsed by both Ruth and Gehrig during their second and final “Bustin’ Babes” and “Larrupin’ Lous” barnstorming tour. This incredibly clean and milky white orb (grade “8”) has endured the decades like no other keepsake. Complying with a fan in his request for signatures which were already decidedly coveted back in 1928, both Ruth and Gehrig have signed in black-ink steel tip fountain pen. In its rightful occupancy of the sweet spot, Ruth’s signature projects (“8”) strength and clarity. Showing similar potency, Gehrig’s west panel penning also shows (“8”) quality. On adjacent panels, the proud original recipient of this prize signed his own name and dated the ball “Oct. 30, 1928.” The latter inscription dates specifically to the aforementioned tour. Less than three weeks after completing a sweep of World Series opponent St. Louis, Ruth and Gehrig traveled to cities without Major League teams and drew the adoration of fans that otherwise would not have an opportunity for a live sighting. More than anything, Ruth’s remarkable consistency kept his gate potential at a peak. A splendid artifact in any condition, this particular heirloom is among the most well-kept Bronx Bomber souvenirs extant. Comes with a full photo LOA from JSA (as well as an expired auction LOA from PSA/DNA).
