Description

A standout with an obscure Ohio college baseball program, Mike Schmidt was plucked by the then-hapless Phillies in the second round of the 1971 draft. Incredibly patient with their young slugger who fanned an alarming once every 3.26 at-bats through his first four seasons, the Phils were eventually rewarded with tape-measure home runs and annual postseason berths. The N.L. circuit clout champion for the sixth time in 1983, Schmidt wore this Phillies home jersey during that year’s I-95 World Series against Baltimore. The white knit zippered garment holds appeal on multiple fronts as a gamer that meets Hall of Fame, World Series and 500 Home Run Club criteria. Decorated with a maroon pinstripe pattern, the jersey features the script-style “P” logo sewn to the left breast in maroon twill, the since-retired “20” sewn to the back and right front in like fashion and “SCHMIDT” arched atop the back number in block-style characters. Maroon trim lines the shoulders and sides and a 4”-diameter Phillies 100th anniversary patch adorns the left sleeve. Within the cotton-lined collar, a strip tag features a chain-stitched notation of “Schmidt.” The tapered left front tail is home to a “Wilson” size “44” label and strip tag with chenille-stitched “84” and “1” identifiers. Of note is the 1984 tagging, which was tailored on jerseys worn in the 1983 NLCS and World Series with the intent to use them the following season (the left sleeve patch was exclusive to 1983 jerseys). Along with the 1983 Phillies, the 1971 San Francisco Giants and 1984 Chicago Cubs employed this practice. All-original and unaltered, the jersey shows light wear.
