Dubbed “The Little General,” Hall of Fame backstop Johnny Bench was decidedly “big” in guiding the Reds to two World Series titles, four pennants and six postseason appearances in a 10-year span. This Hillerich & Bradsby “A99” signature model bat was used by Bench during a 1978 campaign that saw him eclipse the 300 home run plateau and earn his 11th of 13 straight All-Star game selections. Graded GU 8 by PSA/DNA, the uncracked (32-oz/35”) white ash weapon shows excellent game use with ball, bat-rack and stitch impressions throughout, as well as transposed black-ink stampings from ONL balls and minimal grain swelling about the hitting surface. The handle is home to light pine-tar residue and there are black marker notations of “5” on both the knob and barrel end. Full photo LOA from John Taube, PSA/DNA.
